This module will examine community circles as a foundational strategy for using the power of relationships to create a positive classroom climate and culture. Making connections and developing empathy between individuals enable students and staff to address issues and collaboratively problem-solve to determine a solution or compromise before more intensive behavior responses like restraint and time out may be deemed necessary.

The learning objectives for this module are:

  • Identify potential causes of student misbehavior, the role of traditional discipline, and the impact of implicit bias

  • Articulate the importance of the circle shape in building classroom relationships and connections

  • Depict how using community circles can build equity through collaboration and social-emotional learning

  • Identify types and structures of circles used in the classroom and

  • Explain procedures for all kinds of classroom circles
